The upcoming release of Firefox 148, set for February 24th, will introduce a new feature that allows users to completely disable all AI-related functions. The latest code base now includes the “browser.preferences.aiControls” parameter, which can be activated in the about:config page. Once enabled, a new section will appear in the settings page where users can manage the use of AI features. Users have the option to disable all AI functions at once or selectively enable only specific functionalities.
For selective disabling, users can choose to turn off AI-based features such as language translation, text recognition in images and scanned PDF documents, tab grouping recommendations, generating short page previews, and accessing chatbots. Each feature can be individually enabled, disabled, or removed. Disabling a feature will remove locally installed AI models and hide related interface elements.
Furthermore, Firefox 149, set to be released on March 24, will include Split View mode by default. This feature is currently available in the nightly builds of Firefox. In Firefox 147, Split View mode can be enabled by changing the “browser.tabs.splitView.enabled” parameter in the about:config page. Once activated, users can view content from two tabs side by side within a single window.
Users can trigger Split View mode by right-clicking on tabs and selecting the “Add Split View” option. This will divide the window into two sections, with the new tab’s content displayed on the right side. Users can adjust the size of each viewing area by dragging the separator bar. The active tab in Split View mode is highlighted with a red frame for easier identification.
