Published desktop environment release Budgie 10.9.4. The user environment consists of various components including Budgie Desktop, Budgie Desktop View icons, Budgie Control Center for system configuration (a fork of GNOME Control Center), and Budgie Screensaver (a fork of gnome-screensaver). The project code is distributed under the GPLv2 license. Budgie can be experienced through distributions like Ubuntu Budgie, Fedora Budgie, Solus, GeckoLinux, and EndeavourOS.
To manage windows, Budgie uses the Budgie Window Manager (BWM), an extended modification of the basic Mutter plugin. Budgie features a panel similar to classic desktop panels, with all elements being applets for customization of composition, placement, and replacement. Available applets include the application menu, task switcher, open windows list, virtual desktop viewer, power management indicator, volume control, system status indicator, and clock.
The latest release introduces support for the libpeas2 library for creating plugins in C, Python, and Vala using GObject. Python plugin support for the Raven panel has been discontinued, while support for using Python for panel widgets remains. Additionally, support for the girepository-2.0 library has been added, providing access to typelib files and introspection data defining the C API.
