ODF 1.4 Standard Preparation Plans Unveiled

The Document Foundation recently released key directions for Opendocument 1.4 (ODF), a file format for storing documents in XML that is independent of applications and platforms. ODF can be utilized for creating, editing, viewing, exchanging, and archiving various types of content, including text documents, presentations, spreadsheets, raster graphics, vector drawings, diagrams, and more.

The main focus of the development of Opendocument 1.4 includes:

  • Opportunities for cloud editing: ODF will be adapted for real-time collaboration on content using protocols like Wopi and CMIS.
  • Extended capabilities for managing multimedia content: Support will be provided for integrating video and web components into documents.
  • Security profiles: Standardization of features for environments that require heightened security, such as state and medical systems. This includes encryption support, digital signature certification, and measures to prevent the leakage of confidential data.
  • Enhanced accessibility features: Increased support will be offered for tagged PDFs, Aria roles (Accessible Rich Internet Applications), and semantic marking to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
