The AUUSD alliance (Alliance for Openusd) and ASWF (Academy Software Foundation) have jointly prepared new recommendations on the use of inclusive terminology. The AUSD alliance focuses on promoting Openusd (Universal Scene Description) technology and is supported by the Linux Foundation. ASWF, on the other hand, was created by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts (USA) and the Linux Foundation to advocate for the use of open software in film production.
These new recommendations suggest using inclusive language and avoiding certain terms. Some of the words to be avoided include “Sanity Check” (to be replaced by Validation Check, Consistency Check, Logic Check, or Gut Check), “Dummy” (to be replaced by PLACEHOLDER, STUB, or SAMPLE), “hung” (to be replaced by Stalled or unresponsive), and “native feature/support” (to be changed to Core Feature/Support or Built-in Feature/Support).
Other replacement recommendations focus on various categories:
- Social Inequality
- “master”/”SLAVE” should be replaced by PRIMARY/MAIN and Secondary/Replica
- Terms like Owner/Master should be replaced with Lead, Manager, Expert, or Primary
- Blacklist/Whitelist should be changed to Deny/Allow List or Exclusion/Inclusion LIST
- Terms like Black Box/White Box should be replaced with Closed/Open or OpaQue/Transparent
- Black Hat/White Hat should be changed to Malicious Hacker/Approved Hacker or house/firedly
- Mention of Genders
- Replace terms like Man Hours with Labor Hours or Work Hours
- manpower should be replaced with Labor or Workforce
- Use FOLKS, PEOPLE, Engineers/Artists, or Team instead of guys
- Girls should be replaced with Woman/Women for individuals over 18 years old
- Terms like Middleman should be changed to Middle Person, Mediator, Liaison, or Go-Between
- he/Him/HIS, She/Her/Hers should be replaced with They, Them, Theirs
