GNOME Project Releases 2023 Financial Report

The GNOME Foundation published its financial report for the 2023 fiscal year, covering the period from October 2022 to September 2023. The report highlighted key events during this time, such as the GNOME 44 and 45 releases, the appointment of a new director, and developer conferences including Guadec 2023 in Riga, Gnome Asia 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, and Linux App Summit in Brno.

Financially, the report showed that expenses surpassed funds received, with $556 thousand in funds received and $676 thousand spent (an excess of $120 thousand due to past savings). This overspending trend was also observed in previous years – in 2022, the project received $363 thousand and spent $649 thousand, in 2021 it received $287 thousand and spent $927 thousand, in 2020 it received $925 thousand and spent $789 thousand, in 2019 it received $915 thousand and spent $608 thousand, and in 2018 it received $1073 thousand and spent $365 thousand. In November 2023, the project also received a million euros from the Sovereign Foundation.

In terms of sources of funds for 2023, $422 thousand came from donations and sponsorship, $47 thousand from conferences, and $80 thousand from the GIMP project. Expenses for the year included $283 thousand for conferences, $105 thousand for support and infrastructure, $96 thousand for the Outreach program (providing payment for women and minority internships), $30 thousand transferred to the GIMP project, $121 thousand on administrative expenses, and $39 thousand for other project funding.
