Truenas Core 13.3 Transfers FreeBSD-Based Branch to Support Mode

Breaking News: Truenas Core Development Update

IXSystems recently made an announcement regarding the ongoing development of Truenas Core, a distribution aimed at rapidly deploying network storage. This distribution builds upon the foundation laid by the Freenas project. The upcoming release of Truenas Core 13.3, scheduled for June, will be based on FreeBSD 13.3, as opposed to the previous release in 2021 which was based on FreeBSD 13.0. It will also feature OpenZFS 2.2.3 and Samba 4.19.

Looking ahead, development efforts will shift towards Truenas Scale, a distribution that utilizes the Linux core and DEBIAN package base. Although both Truenas Core and Truenas Scale projects will continue to exist concurrently, Truenas Core will transition into maintenance mode. This means that the focus will be on resolving bugs and addressing security concerns to ensure stability for years to come. Meanwhile, Truenas Scale will see enhancements in features and component updates.

It is important to note that there are no plans to release a version of Truenas Core based on FreeBSD 14 in the future. The development roadmap suggests a clear direction towards Truenas Scale as the primary focus for new innovations and advancements in network storage solutions.
