Angie 1.5.0 Released by Russian Nginx Fork

Webserver LLC has recently published the release of a high-performance HTTP server and multi-purpose proxy server called Angie 1.5.0. This web server is a branch from the well-known NGINX, created by a group of former developers from the project who previously worked at F5 Network. The initial texts of Angie can be found under the BSD license, and the project has received compatibility certificates with Russian operating systems Red OS, Astra Linux Special Edition, dew (chrome server), alt, and FSTEK version of alt.

The development of the web server began in the fall of 2022 and received a significant investment of $1 million for its advancement. Co-owners of the company include prominent figures such as Valentin Bartenev, the leader of the Nginx Unit team, Ivan Poluyanov, former head of front-line developers at Rambler and Mail.ru, Oleg Mamontov, head of the NGINX Inc technical support team, and [email protected].

Some of the key changes in the release of Angie 1.5.0 include:

  • Added module http_acme, which automates the process of obtaining and updating certificates using the ACME protocol. This module allows administrators to obtain necessary certificates from Let’s Encrypt or other services supporting the ACME protocol without manual intervention.
  • Introduced the directive auto_redirect to control automatic redirection behavior when a value in the “location” directive ends with “/”. Setting “Auto_Redirect” to “ON” will enable the server to redirect URI requests that do not end in “/” accordingly.
  • Implemented the use of epoch time instead of time in ISO 8601 format when exporting metrics for Prometheus monitoring system or Json API. The parameter “Date = EPOCH” should be used to utilize epochal time.
  • In the API for issuing statistics, a new state “Recovery” is now available, indicating the gradual restoration of an Upstream Host according to Slow_Start condition after a malfunction.
