Hacker to Face Court for De-Energizing 38 Villages

The Federal Security Service of Russia in the Vologda Oblast has completed an investigation into a criminal case involving a Vologda hacker who gained unauthorized access to electricity control systems in February 2023, leading to the disruption of power supply in 38 settlements in the region.

The affected villages are located in the Shaksninsky, Ustyuzhensky, and Babaevsky districts. A criminal case was initiated under part 4 of Article 274.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which pertains to illegal impact on the critical information infrastructure of the country.

According to the investigation, a local resident born in 1975 was identified as the perpetrator of the crime. The case has now been forwarded to the court for further proceedings. The suspect is currently under a travel ban. If found guilty, the offender could face a prison sentence of up to 8 years for this offense.
