Without reaching the 1969 summit, abstention still records a clear increase, at 28.01%.

This second round of the presidential election proposed the same poster as in 2017, which many voters consulted in opinion investigations said not to wish. However, the behavior of the electorate were not similar to what they had been five years earlier. Certainly, abstention records a new increase from 25.44% to 28.01% during this ballot. Without joining the level of the second round of 1969, opposing Georges Pompidou to Alain Poher, where a historic peak of 31.1% had been reached.

This high abstention obeys several factors. First of all a campaign eclipsed by the health crisis, then by the war in Ukraine and an entry into late campaign of the Head of State. Added to that, protest movements in the overseas territories or Corsica have exacerbated the distrust of the current political system and the sense of contempt of public authorities with respect to these populations. Some independent movements have relayed calls to the boycott of the presidential ballot.

The young people who had expressed a protest vote in the first round are the most numerous, according to the IPSOS-SOPRA Steria survey carried out with 4,000 registrants on the electoral lists, interviewed from 21 to 23 April, to have issued the intent to abstain in the second round. The abstention rate in 18-24 years was estimated at 41%. According to the same survey, it is in the popular categories that this declared abstention rate was the highest, at 38%. And according to partisan sympathy, the electors of France unsuitable were 43% to want to abstain.

It’s especially with regard to white newsletters or void that the difference is the most sensitive. In 2017, 3,021,499 white newsletters and 1,064,225 null, a total of 4,085,724, had been recorded, or 11.5% of the votes. Five years later, this number, although it remains important, is sharp decrease: 3,018,090 in white cumulative and zero, or 8.60% of voters. A decrease that is explained by a context where the issue of a republican jumping from the risk of accession of the far right in power has established itself in the last days of the campaign.

The spectrum of an electoral accident

In 2017, despite the progress of Marine Le Pen in the first round, few people imagined it in ability to win in the second round, many voters, especially on the left, showed their non-choice by the abstention but also and especially by the white or zero vote, not wishing to mingle with a second round, in which they do not recognize themselves.
