The Afghan Taliban authorities announced on Saturday 18 December the resumption of passport delivery in Kabul. This statement gives hope to the many Afghans who feel threatened by Islamists in power or want to flee the economic crisis that could turn into a major humanitarian crisis because of the cessation of international aid since the arrival of the Taliban at the head of the country.

“The issuance of passports will begin tomorrow in three regions, including Kabul,” said Alam Gul Haqqani, the head of the passport service. Closed since taking power by the Taliban, in mid-August, the service had briefly reopened in October, but the influx of applications had provoked technical problems, binding the Taliban to interrupt the deliverance after a few days. “All technical problems are solved, biometric devices are repaired,” said Alam Gul Haqqani on Saturday, adding that passports would at first be issued to those who have already filed an application. The new applications will be accepted from January 10, he said.

“Avalanche of famine”

The resumption of passport issuance is a test of the goodwill of the Taliban, which are committed to the international community to leave their compatriots who wish and have valid visas. According to the United Nations (UN), Afghanistan faces “one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world”, which should only worsen with the arrival of winter. The World Food Program (WFP), UNTIL FIGHT AGENCE AGENCY IN THE WORLD, warned against an “Avalanche of Famine” to come.

The Taliban demands a thaw of the funds to revive the economy and fight against the famine threatening, while in Kabul many people must sell their property to feed. International flights, mainly to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, took place in September at Kabul airport, which had been besieged at the end of August by thousands of Afghans wanting to leave the country after the return to the power of the Islamist movement .
