India: dozens of deaths in floods and landslides

At least forty and people died in northern India, carried away by floods and landslides triggered by several days of heavy rains, according to a new report announced, Tuesday, October 19, by the authorities.

Indian meteorology services have also extended on Tuesdays their alert and provide “strong” rains in “very strong” in the region over the next two days. In places, more than 400 mm of water fell on Monday.

Uttarakhand’s Himalayen State authorities announced that landslides had been thirty-five dead, after having already killed six people the day before.

Five members of the same family have been buried in their home, said a local manager, Prateek Jain. Five other victims were killed in a landslide that occurred in the district of Almora, in northern Uttarakhand, and engulfed their home under the rocks and mud.

Closure of schools

Due to weather alerts, the authorities ordered the closure of schools and prohibits any religious or tourist activity in the state.

Retransmitted images by television channels and circulating on social networks show inhabitants to make a way in the water that arrives at their knees near the tourist site of Lake Nainital, or the Ganges which overflows in the City of Rishikesh.

More than a hundred tourists have been blocked in Ramgarh because of the flood of the Kosi River, which flooded several localities.

The landslides regularly strike the North Himalayen of India, but their number increases, according to experts, because of global warming, melting glaciers, hydroelectric barrage construction and deforestation.

In February, a sudden flood devastated the Valley of the Rishi Ganga, in Uttarakhand, killing some two hundred people. Only sixty bodies have been found.

Strong rains expected in the days to come

According to weather forecasts, heavy rains should also strike, in the coming days, the southern state of Kerala, where floods have already done more than twenty-seven deaths since Friday.

Many dams in this tourist state fruited the level of alert, the rivers have overflowed, and the authorities have evacuated thousands of people. After a brief respite on Tuesday, heavy rainfall were again expected over the next two days.
