Attitudes towards Russia and China among the population of Myanmar have changed somewhat after the coup, young people criticize these countries. Russian orientalist Pyotr Kozma, who lives in Myanmar, told Lente.ru about this.
According to him, the tension arose against the background of Facebook blocking in the country. According to the Russian, users of the social network bypassed the blocking anyway, and young people began to behave “a little angrier”.
“This coincided with the efforts of China and Russia to slightly slow down the consideration of the issue of Myanmar in the UN Security Council. Because of this, there is now a wave of negativity towards Beijing and Moscow among active young users. People write: we will die, but the Russian vaccine will not be vaccinated. It is clear that this is not all, mostly young people (…), this is a completely different generation with different values, “he explained.
On February 1, a coup d’etat took place in Myanmar. The military disagreed with the outcome of the fall elections, in which the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party won a decisive victory. The military announced the dissolution of the government and detained the President of Myanmar, Vin Myin, and the head of the party, Aung San Suu Kyi, who holds the post of state adviser and foreign minister.
A state of emergency was introduced in the country for a period of one year. Upon its completion, the army promised to organize new elections, after which power will be transferred to the new government. In addition, the military promised to deal with falsifications in the last parliamentary elections. In the meantime, all power has passed into the hands of the commander-in-chief of the country’s armed forces, Min Aung Hlain.
