The Academy Software Foundation (ASWF), a collaboration between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the USA and the Linux Foundation, has recently launched a new initiative known as the “Wayland for Artists” working group. This working group has been established to address the changes that will come with the transition from X11 to Wayland in the animation and visual effects industry. Its primary goal is to ensure the continued use of Linux as a platform for VFX and animation professionals.
The Wayland for Artists task force will convene stakeholders from the filmmaking community to devise strategies for the implementation of Wayland and to assess how this shift will impact the industry’s professional workstations, content creation applications, and remote access solutions. Key areas of focus for the group include graphics tablet support, window and focus management, hotkey assignments, desktop customization, remote access, GPU acceleration, color management, HDR monitor support, and compatibility with industry applications.
