New releases of guides have been presented for Linux From Scratch 13.0 (LFS) and Beyond Linux From Scratch 13.0 (BLFS), exclusively in the systemd system manager edition. Linux From Scratch offers instructions on building a basic Linux system from scratch using only the source code of necessary software, while Beyond Linux From Scratch provides additional information on building and configuring nearly 1,000 software packages for various applications.
The new branch is notable for ceasing updates for versions of the Linux From Scratch (LFS) and Beyond Linux From Scratch (BLFS) manuals with the SysVinit init system. The LFS/BLFS 12.4 manual with SysVinit will still be accessible, while the LFS/BLFS 13.0 release is only available with the systemd system manager.
In Linux From Scratch 13.0, 36 packages have been updated, including the Linux kernel 6.18.10, systemd 259.1, binutils-2.46, glibc-2.42, vim 9.2.0078, zlib 1.3.2, Python 3.14.3, coreutils 9.10, openssl 3.6.1, and sqlite 3.50.4. Corrections were made to boot scripts errors, and editorial work was done throughout the book.
Beyond Linux From Scratch 13.0 includes over 1,500 updates, with updated versions of GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce, and LXQt. Support for Wayland has been added to LXQt, along with new packages and the removal of certain ones that have been moved to LFS. The manual for “Gaming Linux From Scratch 13.0” has also been updated with instructions for installing computer games and related programs.
