Mozilla has recently updated their page to provide information on the continued support for Firefox on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 platforms. They announced that the final release of the ESR branch, Firefox 115, will be published on February 24. Following this release, no further updates will be issued. The page outlining the plan for ESR updates also now includes a mark indicating the end of the Firefox 115 maintenance cycle.
The initial maintenance period for the Firefox 115 ESR branch was set to expire in September 2024. However, this timeline was extended multiple times until March 2026. This extended support period lasted almost three years, far exceeding the original one-year plan. Firefox 115 was the last branch compatible with Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 operating systems, as well as macOS 10.12, 10.13, and 10.14.
Recent statistics from Mozilla dated February 9, 2026, reveal that 5.68% of Firefox users continue to utilize Windows 7, despite Microsoft ending support for these operating systems in January 2020. In comparison, Linux holds a 4.87% share, macOS accounts for 3.8%, Windows 11 for 45.4%, and Windows 10 for 32.8%. Google Chrome discontinued support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 in February 2023, leaving Firefox as the only major browser to support these platforms.
