EasyOS 7.1 Released by Puppy Linux Creator

Barry Kauler, founder of the Puppy Linux project, published the distribution kit EasyOS 7.1, combining Puppy Linux technologies with the use of container isolation for launching system components. The distribution is managed through a set of graphical configurators developed by the project. boot image size 1 GB.

Features distribution:

  • Each application, as well as the desktop itself, can be launched in separate containers, which are isolated using its own mechanism Easy Containers
  • By default, work is carried out with root rights with privileges reset when starting each application, since EasyOS is positioned as a Live system for one user.
  • The distribution is installed in a separate subdirectory and can coexist with other data on the drive (the system is installed in /releases/easy-7.1, user data is stored in the /home directory, and additional containers with applications are placed in the /containers directory).
  • Encryption of individual subdirectories is supported (for example, /home).
  • It is possible to install meta-packages in SFS format, which are mountable images with Squashfs, combining several common packages and, in fact, reminiscent of the AppImage, Snap and Flatpak formats.
  • The system is updated in atomic mode (the new version is copied to another directory and the active directory with the system is switched) and supports rolling back changes if problems after updating.
  • There is a startup mode in which the system is copied into memory when booted and runs without accessing disks.
  • To build the distribution, the WoofQ2 toolkit and source packages from the Debian project are used.
