The release of Lanemu P2P VPN 0.13.1 – an implementation of a decentralized virtual private network operating on the Peer-To-Peer principle, has been announced. In this network, participants are connected to each other directly, without the need for a central server. Participants can find each other through BitTorrent trackers, BitTorrent DHT, or through other network participants via peer exchange. This application serves as a free and open alternative to VPN Hamachi, and is written in Java with some components in C. Lanemu is distributed under the GNU LGPL 3.0 license and supports Windows, GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, and Mac OS.
Changes in the new version include:
- Added support for BitTorrent trackers using the UDP protocol.
- Added settings for DHT bootstrap nodes and http(s) addresses for determining the WhatIsMyIPv4/6 IP address.
- Network utilities like ifconfig have been replaced with utilities from the iproute2 package.
- Added broadcast and multicast routes for Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS.
- The application now defaults to using the TapV9 driver; if not found, TapOAS will be used.
- Fixed bug where interface metric was not installed on Windows XP.
- Added support for automatically accepting invitations.
- Separated known hosts, BitTorrent trackers, and BitTorrent DHT from the network signature.
- Disabled AWT tray in KDE Plasma 6+ as per issue report.
- Improved function for generating random IP addresses.
- Updated application dependencies like flatlaf, bouncy castle, etc.
- Added a script to run the application as root using the utility run0.
- Enhanced application interface.
