LineageOS 23 Mobile Platform Based On Android 16 Has Been Published

Introduced the release of the mobile platform LineageOS 23, based on the Android 16 codebase. It is noted that the branch LineageOS 23 has reached parity in functionality and stability with branch 22, and is considered ready for the first release. Builds are prepared for 104 device models (28 devices less than in LineageOS 22). LineageOS can also run in the Android Emulator, QEMU and Android Studio. Additionally, the ability to build in Android TV and Android Automotive mode is provided.

In addition to the publication of LineageOS 23, an update to the LineageOS 22.2 branch has been published, for which additional assemblies for 39 devices have been generated. The LineageOS 20 branch has also been updated, to which fixes related to eliminating vulnerabilities have been transferred. When installing installation, all supported devices are offered their own Lineage Recovery by default, which does not require a separate recovery partition.

The Android 16 release supports working with Linux kernels starting from branch 5.4, but the necessary changes were ported by LineageOS developers for kernels up to version 4.14. The necessary components have not yet been ported to kernels 4.4 and 4.9, which has led to a loss of compatibility with devices based on the Qualcomm MSM8998/MSM8996, Qualcomm MSM8953 and Qualcomm SDM845 SoCs. However, porting is potentially possible and depends on the availability of enthusiasts willing to do the work. For owners of devices for which only old Linux kernels are available, it is recommended to use the LineageOS 22.2 update, for which kernels 4.4 and 4.9 are available.

Compared to LineageOS 22, in addition to improvements specific to Android 16, the following changes are proposed:

  • Extended usage capabilities vanilla Linux kernels (mainline), and not just the modified kernel variants supplied by the Android platform. Ensures compatibility with devices that are supported by the mainstream Linux kernel and can be booted using unmodified kernels.
  • Vulnerability patches published between September 2024 and August 2025 are applied. Google has switched from monthly to quarterly posting of bug and vulnerability fixes to the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) repository, so Android-specific fixes in LineageOS will now lag. Additionally, the LineageOS 23 release is currently based on the original Android 16 QPR0 update and not the already available QPR1, as the source code associated with QPR1 has not yet been publicly released.
  • The application for working with the camera – Aperture
