Oracle Cuts 70 Jobs from MySQL Team

Oracle Slammed for Personnel Reduction in DBMS MySQL

According to data from the publication The Register, Oracle has recently cut 70 employees involved in the development of the popular database management system MySQL. Among those affected were several experienced developers. Michael “Monti” Videnius, co-founder of MySQL and creator of the MariaDB project, expressed his disappointment over the mass layoffs. In a LinkedIn post, Videnius mentioned that while he was not surprised by Oracle’s actions, it still deeply saddened him to see MySQL being impacted.

Pyotr Zaitsev, co-founder of Percona and former head of the performance optimization group at MySQL AB, also expressed his concerns about the consequences of the personnel reduction. In a LinkedIn post, Zaitsev warned that this move could potentially lead to a decline in community support for MySQL.
