The GNU project presented an electronic payment system GNU Taler 1.0. The platform has been assigned the number 1.0 to signify its readiness for work payment services introduction and the stabilization of software interfaces. Moreover, it aims to ensure reverse compatibility for future upgrades.
Sales points utilizing the GNU Taler payment service can now legally operate in Switzerland, catering to both individuals and legal entities conducting transactions in Swiss francs.
The use of GNU Taler for the sale of goods in Switzerland has been legalized to ensure the protection of user assets. While no stores currently accept payments through GNU Taler due to it being in its initial launch phase as a public beta version, the developers are encouraging business owners in Switzerland to integrate GNU Taler. To support the payment system, an organization called taler opurations ag has been established.
Businesses interested in implementing sales with GNU Taler only need to have an account with a Swiss bank and launch the backend provided by the platform for sales organization. The backend is linked to the account through IBAN settings and allows for the generation of QR codes for buyers to pay for goods, with prices set by the seller or buyer.
A plugin is available to integrate the payment service with the WooCommerce platform for creating online stores. Additionally, a plugin is offered for the Pretix platform for ticket sales. An Android platform is also provided for point-of-sale operations, payment, and service management, catering to restaurant visitors.
The GNU Taler code is written in Python and distributed under the AGPLv3 and LGPLv3 licenses. It comprises basic components for organizing bank operations, exchange points, trading platforms, wallets, and auditing. The system allows for seller identification for tax purposes while maintaining customer anonymity. Financing for development comes from grants by the European Commission
