GRML 2025.05 Launches: Admins’ Live District

The GRML project has recently announced the release of the LIVE-Distribution GRML 2025.05. This release offers a range of programs designed for system administrators to carry out tasks such as data recovery after failures and incident analysis. Based on the DEBIAN GNU/Linux package base, this distribution celebrated its twentieth anniversary last year. The graphical environment is built using the window manager fluxbox, with the ZSH command shell provided by default. The full ISO image size is 960 MB, while the abbreviated version is 536 MB.

In the latest release, the following updates and changes are highlighted:

  • The packages are synchronized with the Debian Testing repository as of May 14, with the Linux kernel updated to version 6.12.
  • New GRML-HWINFO, GRML-KEYRING, and GRML-PASTE packages have been created by GRML developers and are now part of Debian.
  • A new digital signature for packages distributed through the deb.grml.org repository has been implemented.
  • The package fai has been replaced by the minifai utility in GRML-Live Live gaps creation tools.
  • During boot, the “SSH=” option has been added to announce the SSH service using AVAHI.
  • Performance optimizations and support without Systemd have been introduced in the GRML-Autoconfig loading process.
  • The GRML-Hwinfo utility now collects disk information using the Smartctl utility in JSON format.
  • Support for I386 architecture and Debian 8 and 9 issues has been discontinued in GRML-debootstrap, with improvements made for UEFI ARM systems.
  • New packages included in the release are IPXE, IWD, LINKS, LRZSZ, SOPV-GPGV, and SQV.
  • The supply of packages has been modified, with additions and removals, including ACPI-Support, APT-UTILS, CDEBOOTRAP, Cron, and more.
