FRENCH HOSPITALS HIT BY CYBER TERRORISM

Simona Veil’s Hospital in Cannes Hit by Cyber Attack

Simona Veil’s Hospital in Cannes (CHC-SV) experienced a cyber attack that disrupted the facility’s operations, prompting staff to resort to manual record-keeping.

CHC-SV is a prominent medical institution in France, particularly in the Cannes region, offering a wide array of medical services with 2,100 employees, including 230 doctors. The hospital, equipped with 869 beds, treats 150,000 outpatients annually and conducts 9,000 surgeries, including deliveries.

The hospital management stated that at the start of the week, all computers had to be shut down due to the cyber attack, leaving only telephone lines for communication. An investigation into the incident is currently underway, with details of the attack undisclosed, although no ransom demands or data thefts have been reported.

While medical services at the hospital continue, data maintenance is being done manually. Some patients are being redirected to other hospitals. Approximately 30% of scheduled surgeries for the week have been canceled, and many non-urgent appointments have been postponed. Consultations not requiring computer access for data or test results are proceeding as normal.

A hospital representative mentioned that CHC-SV had never faced such a cyber attack before, but recent cybersecurity training helped localize the damage and minimize the impact of the incident.

CHC-SV’s current priority is the restoration of patient records, including test results and medical histories, although the process may be protracted depending on the technical investigations.

As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the cyber attack on CHC-SV.
