Italian virologist predicted peak of spread of coronavirus

Director of the Italian Institute of Molecular Genetics (IGM) and head of the Department of Virology, Giovanni Maga, predicted in an interview with Izvestia peak of the spread of coronavirus in Europe.

According to him, the circulation of COVID-19 will continue throughout the winter season, it is too difficult to talk about a transition to a plateau. According to the virologist, in different countries this will happen at the right time, depending on the epidemiological situation, the severity of containment measures and the discipline of the population.

The specialist noted that treatment is as necessary as the vaccine. “With the drug, we will protect the vulnerable population, with the help of therapy, we will cure the rest,” he stressed, adding that the vaccine plays an important role in the fight against coronavirus, but this is not the final answer to the disease.

According to the virologist, it will take years to vaccinate a sufficient number of people and develop herd immunity. “Not everyone will agree to be vaccinated, and some will not be able to be vaccinated for health reasons, so someone will always be infected,” concluded Maga.

Earlier in Rospotrebnadzor stated that a person will not be able to forget about COVID-19 even with the advent of an effective vaccine. Restrictions due to COVID-19 will also remain until the virus is no longer a threat to human health.
