Russians were scared of biometrics from state

The creation of the Unified Biometric System (UBS) is not supported by half of Russians, only 19 percent of citizens have posted data in it. This is evidenced by the results of a survey by the analytical center NAFTI, writes RBC.

A third of respondents could not explain the reasons for not trusting the system. The rest were afraid of government surveillance or are not sure about the protection of personal data.

19 percent of those surveyed announced their participation in the EBS, which has been operating since 2018. More than a third of respondents have never heard of the possibility of passing biometrics in a bank, and in Moscow and St. Petersburg this figure is 36 percent, and in other cities with a population of over one million – 28 percent.

The two largest Russian cities lag behind in terms of the number of registered in the system – only 14 percent. At the same time, in other large cities the indicator is twice as high, and in villages it is 16 percent.

Of those who did not upload their biometric data, only one in five thinks about such a possibility in the future. More confidence is expressed by people aged 18-24 and 25-34 – 25 and 22 percent, respectively. But among citizens aged 35-44 and over 60, 80 and 81 percent of survey participants answered the question negatively.

Rostelecom complained about a large number of myths about biometrics, which generate distrust on the part of citizens. According to a company representative, greater awareness will lead to the fact that the number of people willing to use its citizens will grow. He assured that all data is stored in an impersonal form, and it is impossible to restore the photo and voice from them.

A unified biometric system allows you to verify your identity remotely and receive digital services. First of all, it is used by banks so that customers can take out a loan or open a deposit. Last week The State Duma adopted a law that expands the capabilities of the EBS. So, you can pay with a person, for example, for purchases in stores.

Previously Moscow authorities confirmed the leak of data of citizens who have had coronavirus. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of people, their names, addresses and medical information appeared on the Web. The mayor’s office explained that the problem is related to the human factor.
