Capitol police chief resigns

Capitol Police Chief Stephen Sand has resigned amid riots in Washington DC. This was reported by CNN.

It is noted that Sand decided to leave after facing criticism accusing the police of failing to protect Capitol Hill from the crowd of protesters that broke into the Congress building the day before.

The resignation of the police chief comes into force on January 16. As Sund admitted, he did not think that the demonstrations in the US capital would escalate into an assault on the Capitol.

Earlier, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for Sand’s dismissal.

During the assault on the building about 50 police officers were injured . Some of them were hospitalized with serious injuries.
