Argentina allowed abortion

Argentine Senate approved a bill to legalize abortion. It is reported by the BBC.

The adopted document allows the termination of pregnancy without medical indications for up to 14 weeks. During the vote on the bill, hundreds of supporters of the legalization of abortion with green bandanas, a symbol of the movement, gathered outside the parliament building.

The bill was introduced to parliament by the President of Argentina Alberto Fernandes . On December 11 it was approved by the lower house of the Argentine parliament. The Catholic Church opposed the legalization of abortion.

Prior to that, the country was allowed to terminate a pregnancy only if it occurred due to rape or if the mother’s life was threatened. The government estimated that about 38,000 women were hospitalized every year due to complications from a mishandled abortion.
