Farmers on tractors in Chisinau blocked government building

Moldovan farmers again protested in front of the government building in Chisinau. They blocked the entrances to the building with tractors and said they would not leave the square until the authorities agreed to negotiate, reports RIA Novosti .

According to the agency, farmers received permission to enter 200 tractors into Chisinau on December 9th. They staged the first protest action in front of the building of the Cabinet of Ministers on December 10, demanding that the authorities increase the amount of compensation for the lost crop and abolish the increase in VAT on agricultural products from 8 to 12 percent.

It is noted that the audience actively buzzed with horns to attract the attention of the townspeople. “We have blocked traffic on the Stefan cel Mare boulevard, but the authorities are not interested in anything – neither stopping the traffic, nor our demands. Let all those who want to achieve the resignation of the government join us,” the rally organizers said.

In the summer of 2020, a severe drought was established on the territory of Moldova, which ruined the harvest of sunflower and wheat. Later, the farmers demanded that the government pay compensation for each hectare of crops lost in the amount of three thousand lei (about 13 thousand rubles). The authorities allowed the agrarians to continue protest actions until December 31.

On November 15, the second round of the presidential elections took place in Moldova. Former Prime Minister Maia Sandu received 57.75 percent of the vote, current president Igor Dodon a > – 42.25 percent. Sandu’s inauguration ceremony is scheduled for December 24.
