Senegal: 39 dead in bus collision

Video thirty-nine people were killed and a hundred injured in Kaffrine during an accident between two buses. A three -day national mourning has been decreed.

The bus accident took place on the night of Saturday, 7 to Sunday 8 January 2023, in the locality of Sikilo near the city of Kaffrine, about 250 km south-east of the capital Dakar. The government announced a final assessment on Sunday evening of 39 dead, 53 hospitalized injured and 42 wounded lighter treated in local health centers. “The two buses would have contained 139 travelers at the time of the accident,” said the government in a statement.

Ten of the wounded are in “vital emergency,” said President Sall after going to the victims’ bedside at Kaffrine hospital with his Prime Minister Amadou Ba.

The head of state, who had previously decided to “a national mourning three days from Monday”, promised rapid measures to avoid the reissue of a new “tragedy” of this kind. “We cannot expose the lives of our compatriots in a transport system that ignores respect for human life,” he said.

The Prime Minister must bring together on Monday, January 9, an inter -ministerial council to take measures relating to “the state of vehicles, technical control, delivery of driving license or even transport times”.
