Brazil: Jair Bolsonaro comes out of silence, two days after his defeat in presidential election

The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, spoke for the first time since his defeat in the presidential election, Tuesday 1 er November, at the presidential palace, in Brasilia. It ends a silence which will have lasted two days. The far -right president had isolated himself in his official residence, in Brasilia, after the announcement of the results, very tight (50.9 % against 49.1 %), Sunday.

During his statement, Jair Bolsonaro did not openly recognize his defeat. He also did not congratulate Lula, but he undertook to “respect the Constitution”, paving the way for the transition. In the past, Mr. Bolsonaro had criticized the voting system, leaving doubt about his recognition of the results.

Tuesday, he positioned himself against the blockages of the roads during the demonstrations organized in his support. He deplored that these movements “prevent freedom of circulation”, while adding that they were “the fruit of a feeling of indignation and injustice”.
