An attempt was made to create a patent pool for free sound codec of Opus

Vectis IP, specializing in intellectual property management, announced about the beginning of the formation of a patent pool for the licensing of technologies used in the free sound code of the OPUS. 10 years ago, OPUS was standardized ( RFC 6716 ) ITF (Internet Engineering Task Force) as a sound codec for Internet applications, not requiring licensing deductions and not intersecting with patented technologies. Vectis IP intends to change the status of this Codca associated with licensing patents and has begun to accept applications from companies owning patents crossing with OPUS.

technologies.

After the form of a patent pool, the deductions are planned to focus on manufacturers of hardware devices with OPUS support. Licensing will not affect the open implementations of the codec, applications, services and the distribution of contents. The first owners of patents who joined the initiative were companies
Fraunhofer and Dolby. It is expected that in the coming months a pool of more than a hundred patents will be formed and manufacturers will be invited to license the use of the OPUS codec in their devices. The amount of deductions will be 15-12 euro centers from each device.

It is noted that in addition to the OPUS format by Vectis IP, work is in parallel on the formation of patent pools, covering other technologies related to images and video coding, communications, electronic commerce and computer networks.

OPUS Codec was created by combining the best technologies from the XIPH.org codeca Celt and the Skype Silk Skype. In addition to Skype and Xiph.org, companies such as Mozilla, Octasic, Broadcom and Google also took part in the development of OPUS. OPUS is characterized by high quality coding and minimal delay both when compressing streaming sound with a high bitrate and when squeezing a voice in voIP-telephony limited in throughput. Previously, OPUS was recognized as the best codec when using the 64KBIB Bitrate (Opus overtaken such competitors as Apple He-aC, Nero He- AAC, Vorbis and AAC LC). The reference implementation of the encoder and the decoder Opus spread under the BSD license. Full specifications of the format are publicly available, free and approved as an Internet station.

All patents used in OPUS are provided by companies participating in the development for unlimited use without payment of licensing deductions – patents are automatically delegated for use and products using OPUS and products, without the need for additional approval. There are no restrictions on the scope and creation of alternative third -party implementations. At the same time, all granted rights are responded in case of unleashing the OPUS of the Patent Pirotion against any user OPUS. Vectis IP activity is aimed at finding patents that intersect with OPUS, but do not belong to companies that initially participated in its development, standardization and promotion.
