Law enforcement officers have reported the development of a new strain of malware by attackers linked to cybercrower groups. The group known as FIN7, which operated from 2013 to 2018, targeted over 100 companies and organizations in the United States, breaching thousands of different systems.
In the US alone, the hackers stole more than 15,000,000 payment cards and compromized over 6,500 POS terminals. The data was then resold on the darknet to third parties. The affected companies included Chipotle Mexican Grill, Chili’s, Arby’s, Red Robin, and Jason’s Deli.
The FBI has launched an investigation into the matter and advises companies to take adequate measures to protect their systems from such attacks. This highlights the ongoing importance of maintaining cyber security measures in order to protect sensitive information.
