Weston Composite Server 12.0 Issue

Weston, the composite server designed to support the Wayland protocol in desktop environments and consumer devices, has announced the release of its stable version 12.0 after eight months of development. The new version is aimed at providing a high-quality code base and working examples for using Wayland in platforms such as smartphones, televisions, and automobile information and entertainment systems. The project, which is licensed under MIT, intends to provide full support for Wayland in several user environments, including Enlightenment, Gnome, and KDE.

The reason for the change of Weston’s significant version is mostly due to the ABI changes that violate compatibility. The new Weston branch includes a Bacand feature to allow remote access to desktop-Backed-VNC, which enables similar functions to Backend-RPD. The VNC protocol was implemented using aml and Neatvnc, with supported user authentication and communication channels. Additionally, Weston now has a Bacend feature to work with Pipewire multimedia server, and significant changes in the DRM (Direct Rendering Manager), including support for configurations with several GPUs and added support for the Tearing-Control protocol.

Weston’s Backend-Wayland now implements Operations for Changes in size using the extension XDG-SHELL, while Backend-RDP remote access has preliminary support for multi-monitor systems (Multi-Head). The Backend-Headless backend supports the decoration of the output used to test the Color-LCMS plugin, and the outdated and disabled component of Launcher-Logind has been replaced by Launcher-Libseat, which also supports Logind. Finally, Libweston/Desktop (Libweston-Desktop) now supports the waiting status applied at the stage before attaching to the client of the conclusion buffer.

The new Weston 12.0 has provided significant upgrades to its features and laid a solid foundation for using Wayland in various desktop environments and devices. Developers are currently optimistic about the possibilities that Weston 12.0 could offer and are working towards more advanced and further-reaching changes to its future releases.
