Fedora 39 proposes atomic update for Onyx assembly

The Budgie project, led by key developer Joshua Strobl, has proposed turning on Fedora ONYX. This is an updated version of Fedora Linux with the Budgie user environment, which complements the classic assembly of Fedora Budgie Spin. The editorial office of Fedora Onyx is similar to those of Fedora Silverblue, Fedora sericea, and Fedora kinoite, which are supplied with Gnome, SWAY, and KDE.

The proposal suggests supplying the release of Fedora Linux 39 with Fedora ONYX. However, it has not yet been considered by the Fesco committee, which is responsible for the technical part of the Fedora distribution.

Based on the technologies of Fedora Silverblue, Fedora ONYX is supplied in the form of a monolithic image that is not divided into separate packages and updated atomically through a whole replacement. The basic environment is assembled from official RPM packages of Fedora using the RPM-Sostree tools and is mounted in read-only mode.

To install and update additional applications, a system of self-sufficient Flatpak bags is used. This system separates applications from the main system and runs them in a separate container.
