Linux Mint 21.2 Distribution Released

Linux Mint 21.2 Release: New Features and Improvements

Linux Mint has recently unveiled the release of their latest distribution, Linux Mint 21.2. This version continues to build upon the success of their Ubuntu-based package, 22.04 LTS. While fully compatible with Ubuntu, Linux Mint stands out with its unique approach to user interface organization and default application selection. The developers of Linux Mint prioritize a traditional desktop layout, which caters to users who prefer the classic desktop experience over the newer GNOME interface 3. The DVD version of Linux Mint 21.2 is available in three different flavors:

  • Mate 1.26 shells (2.8 GB)
  • Cinnamon 5.8 (2.8 GB)
  • Xfce 4.18 (2.8 GB)

Linux Mint 21 falls within the releases that receive Long Term Support (LTS) and will continue to receive updates until 2027.

Main Changes in Linux Mint 21.2

The following are the main changes in Linux Mint 21.2 for each edition:

Mate Edition:

The Mate edition introduces a new release of the Cinnamon 5.8 desktop environment. It builds upon the ideas of GNOME 2, offering users a familiar desktop with a panel that includes a menu, a fast startup area, a list of open windows, and a system tray with applets. Cinnamon is based on GTK and GNOME 3, aiming to provide a modern design while incorporating elements from GNOME Shell.
