No More Bets: Cyber Abundance Woes Mirror in Chinese Cinema

In just 2 weeks, the box office of the film “There are no more bets” (No more Bets) has reached an impressive milestone of $355 million. According to Maoyan, a leader in online cinema sales in China, the film has been leading in daily sales since its premiere on August 8. It has also surpassed many other popular Asian films. Maoyan predicts that the film could collect around $510 million at the box office. The film has received a high level of audience satisfaction, with a rating of 9.2 out of 10.

What makes “No More Bets” particularly surprising is the fact that it does not feature any characters from comics or mythical heroes. The creators of the film made a deliberate decision to center the plot around the current topic of cyber abuse. The film stars popular actors Bande Exo Zhang and Jin Chen, known for their roles in historical novels. They play a couple who fall into a trap of abuse in the fictional city of Jianan in Southeast Asia.

The intriguing plot of the film also touches on the plight of a graduate from the University of Tien, who becomes a victim of an online casino and tragically ends their own life. Director Shen Ao revealed that he included this story in the plot after learning about a real-life case similar to the tragedy of Tien.

The film portrays a universal concern in China regarding the problem of cyber abuse. It is reported that the north of Myanmar has been identified as one of the epicenters of such activities, where five adolescents from Yunnan province recently became victims of these schemes. The severity of the problem was highlighted through diplomatic discussions at the highest levels.

Taiwanese actor JiMy Liu, who played an immigration officer in the film, believes that the public needed to see a movie addressing this topic. He states that prior to “No More Bets,” no major commercial film had explored the issue of cyber abuse. Liu asserts that the film allows viewers to gain a deeper understanding of cyber aggression and encourages them to reflect on personal choices and the vulnerability one faces in the digital world.
