Russia vs. YouTube: Blocking Test or Global Failure?

In total, as of 19.05, more than 2400 reports on YouTube failures were recorded.
Residents of Moscow and the Moscow Region, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg
and Krasnodar and other Russian regions complain about failures. Also, complaints
come from the capitals of other countries – Kyiv, Minsk, Bishkek, Istanbul.

The most common problem is that the video does not upload, there are also difficulties
with the work of the site, the application and with the entrance to the account.

YouTube representatives have not yet commented on the situation. The reasons for the
failures are unknown.

YouTube is the world’s largest video hosting belonging to Google. According to the data
for 2020, more than two billion users come on YouTube monthly.

Earlier it became known that the Russian Internet provider Rostelecom is testing a new
service that duplicates YouTube, but is controlled from Russia. This may mean that the
authorities are preparing a “soft” blocking of video hosting, on which it will be
possible to filter “undesirable” content.
