Satisfied but tense employees: intensification of work increased mental load

The Montaigne Institute publishes, Thursday, February 2, an investigation into the report of working assets which announces a busy year for managers.

The taste for a job well done and the taste of others are still relevant, according to the latest study of the Montaigne Institute, “The French at work: going beyond received ideas” to be published Thursday, February 2. The active ingredients like their work, as painful as it is, but want to do it in good conditions, and more in teleworking. And if they are ready to work more, it’s to earn more. “The central concern for remuneration is reflected in our survey by the importance of (…)” to earn money “in the sense given to work, more in the private sector than in the public, and in particular for the workers” , comments the Montaigne Institute.

The think tank led to these conclusions in two stages. Kantar Public carried out an investigation in the fall of 2022 entitled “The work in the XXI eth century” for him, which gave the floor to more than 5,000 employment workers (employees and self -employed, Whether in the public sector or in the private sector) so that they themselves describe their relationship to work. Then, he entrusted the econometric analysis to the Kearney consulting firm to dissect the data, identify the ruptures with the previous studies of the Montaigne Institute, by crossing them with national and European statistics in order to explore causal links .

In this study, management appears as a major issue in connection with the quality of life at work. It is above all the workload which appears problematic: 60 % consider that it has increased in the past five years. A quarter of employees (24 %) and 18 % of the self -employed even consider it “excessive”: 31 % in the health, social and culture sectors and 30 % within the intermediate professions.

“We no longer disconnect”

Most of the factors that explain the feeling of this “excessive” workload are subjective: a degraded relationship with management, low autonomy at work … and above all a psychic charge, which weighs heavily on assets . “Managers should be more aware than their role is more than they imagine it important for the satisfaction of employees. Disstablished on them, even if they are light, weigh heavy,” comments economist Bertrand Martinot, specialist of the employment of the Montaigne Institute.

Contrary to what is observed for physical arduousness, the mental charge does not depend on the socio -professional category. On the other hand, it strikes certain sectors more than others: health, social, accommodation and catering. Psychic arduousness is strongly felt: 47 % of the assets interviewed believe that their work is psychologically painful. “Questions related to occupational health, especially mental health and treatment, if possible preventive, of an excessive mental charge, must become central concerns”, recommend the authors.
