Linux kernel 7.3, expected to be released on October 19, accepted change, translatingthe Ext4 “data=journal” file system mounting mode to the category of obsolete technologies. They plan to discontinue support for this mounting option in 2028.
The “data=journal” option enables a full logging mode, in which not only metadata, but also the data itself is written to the journal, which provides high stability in case of failures, but complicates code maintenance, leading to a significant decrease in performance compared to the “data=ordered” and “data=writeback” modes. In addition, this option does not combine with some features, such as lazy block allocation (delalloc) and direct I/O, and interferes with the implementation of new functionality in Ext4.
