Release Of Chrome 155 With Inclusion Of HTTPS-First Mode And Support For JPEG XL Format

Google has published the release of the web browser Chrome 155. At the same time, a stable release of the free project Chromium, which serves as the basis of Chrome, is available. The Chrome browser differs from Chromium in the use of Google logos, the presence of a system for sending notifications in case of a crash, modules for playing copy-protected video content (DRM), an automatic update installation system, the constant inclusion of Sandbox isolation, supplying keys to the Google API and passing RLZ parameters during searches. For those who need more time to update, the Extended Stable branch is separately supported, followed by 8 weeks. The next release of Chrome 156 as part of the new two-week development cycle is scheduled for October 20.

Major changes in Chrome 155 (1, 2,3, 4):

  • For all users, the “HTTPS-First” function is enabled by default, automatically redirecting HTTP requests to HTTPS for publicly accessible sites not hosted on intranets, such as 192.168.0.1/16 and 10.0.0.0/8. To ensure work with sites that do not support HTTPS, a fallback to HTTP has been implemented if, after redirection, a request via HTTPS fails or problems arise with certificates. When you try to open a site via HTTP, a special warning is displayed.
  • Enabled by default support for decoding images in JPEG XL format. The implementation is based on the jxl-rs library written in Rust. JPEG XL reduces file size by 30-50% compared to JPEG images of identical quality. Advanced features supported include HDR, animation, transparency, progressive loading mode, smooth degradation at lower bitrates, lossless JPEG compression, support for up to 4099 channels and a wide range of color depths.
  • The visual design of the interface for creating profiles has been changed (the functionality remains the same). For the Windows platform, a new introduction to creating profiles has been added, shown when you first launch the browser (for Linux and macOS, it will appear in Chrome 158). src=”https://www.opennet.ru/opennews/pics_base/CFD0C5CECEC5D4_1791398060.png” title=”” border=”0″>
