Ubuntu developers have announced the release of LightDM 1.33.0, the display manager used in Linux Mint, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, and Ubuntu MATE. LightDM serves as a background process for running display servers, GUI login modules, user authentication via PAM, and remote desktop connections. Unlike some other display managers, LightDM is not limited to specific desktop environments or protocols such as X11 or Wayland. One of its key features is its low memory consumption. The code for LightDM is written in C and is distributed under the GPL license.
The latest version of LightDM includes support for Qt6 in the library liblightdm-qt, which is used for developing graphical login screens. Developers still have the option to use Qt5. In addition to adding Qt6 support, the update addresses various bug fixes that have accumulated over the past four years. Performance optimizations have also been implemented to enhance the user experience.
