Classic Game NetHack 5.0.0 Released

NetHack 5.0.0, a console turn-based single-player strategy game in the Roguelike genre, has been released. Players can explore dynamically generated underground labyrinths, fight monsters, find artifacts, and level up their abilities. The key to success in the game lies in studying the source text and strategizing with other players. NetHack has been in development since 1987, with the last major release, NetHack 3.6.0, dating back to 2015. The game’s code is written in C and distributed under the NetHack open license.

The new version of NetHack boasts more than 3,100 fixes and changes, along with a substantial cleanup of the code base, an improved architecture, and a revamped assembly process. The game’s code has been updated to comply with the C99 standard. It now supports cross-compilation for various platforms and operating systems. The compilers for game levels and dungeons, as well as the engine for handling text files with quests, have been rewritten in Lua from yacc and lex, providing built-in content generation during gameplay.
