AntiX 26 Lightweight Distribution Released

AntiX 26, a lightweight Live distribution presented on the Debian package base, has been released. This distribution is designed for installation on outdated equipment and is built without the systemd system manager, using eudev instead of udev. The default initialization system is runit. The user environment features the IceWM window manager, with fluxbox, jwm, and herbstluftwm also included in the package.

The iso images for the release come in two options: a full 2.3 GB version including LibreOffice and 4 window managers, and a smaller 676 MB version without graphics. Builds are available for both x86_64 and i386 architectures.

The latest release of AntiX 26 is based on the Debian 13 package base, a change from the previous Debian 12 base. Five init systems are available: runit (default), sysVinit, dinit, s6-rc, and s6-66. The full build is equipped with the Linux kernel 6.6, while other editions feature kernel 5.10.224.

In terms of composition, the default user environment includes the IceWM window manager and the zzzFM file manager. Full editions come with Pipewire multimedia server and WirePlumber audio session manager. Other features include xmms for sound playback, celluloid, mpv, and Xine for video viewing, and mirage for image viewing. Users can also enjoy internet radio listening with streamtuner2, maintain notes with cherrytree, view YouTube with gtk-pipe-viewer, and more.

Additional tools and applications included in AntiX 26 are for file management, audio and video conversion, network setup, text editing, backup, email, scanning, torrent downloading, and system settings. Console applications like nano and vim-tiny editors, newsboat RSS reader, irssi chat, and more are also part of the package.
