Fedora Forge Dev Platform Launches

The Community Linux Engineering Team (CLE Team), established at Red Hat to solve technical problems of the Fedora and CentOS projects, such as providing infrastructure, preparing releases, and quality assurance, announced its readiness to use the Fedora Forge collaborative development platform, built on the Forgejo project. The Fedora Forge project was created to replace Fedora’s own Pagure framework for sharing code and package metadata. It was decided to abandon Pagure due to its high maintenance resource requirements, stagnation, and limited usage outside of Fedora.

Teams involved in the development of Fedora Linux have been given time to transition from pagure.io to Fedora Forge until June 2026. Following Flock 2026, June 14-16, pagure.io content will be moved to read-only archive mode. Before the release of Fedora 46 in 2027, all other services using Pagure, including repositories with package source code on src.fedoraproject.org, will be retired.

Fedora Forge will be responsible for maintaining the project infrastructure, preparing releases and maintaining packages, organizing project work, and developing Fedora-specific applications such as Fedora Badges, Bodhi, and fedmsg. It is prohibited to develop personal projects or third-party projects unrelated to Fedora on Fedora Forge.

While some functionality is still missing in Forgejo compared to Pagure, such as the ability to conduct confidential discussions in public repositories, Fedora is working with Forgejo developers to implement these features.

  • maintaining the project infrastructure (configuration management, development of tools and deployment scripts);
  • preparing releases and maintaining packages (tools, utilities, and templates for building, generating, and distributing Fedora releases);
  • organizing project work (preparing documentation and specifications, team collaboration);
  • Developing Fedora-specific applications such as Fedora Badges, Bodhi, and fedmsg.
