Euro-Office Fork Sparks ONLYOFFICE License Dispute

Several European companies and organizations, including Nextcloud, IONOS, Eurostack, XWiki, OpenProject, Soverin, Abilian and BTactic, presented an open platform for collaboration document editing Euro-Office, based on the code base of the office suite ONLYOFFICE. The fork has been rebranded, and changes have been made to the text of the AGPLv3 license, removing additional terms regarding the logo and trademarks. Such changes were perceived by ONLYOFFICE developers as a violation of the license, which they called for immediate elimination.

From 2021, in the text of the AGPLv3 license, under which distributes the ONLYOFFICE code, is present with additional terms clarifying the AGPL’s attribution and non-trademark obligations. Additional terms require that derivative products retain the original ONLYOFFICE logo to maintain brand recognition. The addition to the license also mentions the absence of obligations to grant rights to the ONLYOFFICE trademarks.

The creators of the Euro-Office fork removed additional requirements and contact information from the text of the license data from Ascensio System, leaving only a notice regarding the license of the resources used in the graphical interface and a disclaimer. The change is justified by the reference in section 7 of the AGPLv3 license to the right to remove additional restrictions introduced beyond the conditions defined in sections 7(a)-7(f).
