The Basalt SPO company unveiled the latest version of the mobile platform ALT Mobile 11.0 (“Alt Mobile”), specifically designed for smartphones, tablets, and touch screen devices such as barcode readers, cash registers, and data collection terminals. The platform is built on the package base of the repository Sisyphus (p11) and features a graphical shell Phosh, which is based on GNOME technologies and utilizes a composite server Phoc.
Images for architectures x86_64 and ARM64 have been made available for download, suitable for installation on various devices like PinePhone, PinePhone Pro, PineTab 2, and “MIG” tablets (x86-64 architecture). Additionally, it can be run in QEMU. The platform has also been ported to work on Anbernic, PowKiddy, Retroid game consoles based on SoC Rockchip, Allwinner, and Qualcomm.
Individuals, including individual entrepreneurs, are free to use the downloaded version. Commercial and government organizations are allowed to download and test the platform, but for permanent use within corporate infrastructure, they must purchase licenses or enter into written licensing agreements. ALT Mobile development follows the principles of free software, with the entire code base being open.
The platform supports the system of multiple users, with the login manager Phrog being used to switch between users. Additionally, applications compiled for Android and Windows can be launched using Waydroid and Wine. A terminal emulator is also available for command line operations, with support for full-disk encryption based on LUKS.
When connected to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, ALT Mobile enables the device to function as a full-fledged workstation with a GNOME-like environment. Users can install applications from repositories for desktop editions of ALT Linux, as well as packages in flatpak format.
The platform comes with various applications, including GNOME Control Center 48.4, GNOME Software 49.2, GNOME Console 48.0.1, Errands 46.2.9, Dialect 2.5.0, GNOME Authenticator, Calculator, Calendar, Clock, Text editor, Weather, Camera, and File Manager.
