French Government Agencies Eye Shift from Windows to Linux

France’s Minister of Budget, Public Accounts, and Civil Administration, David Amiel, has revealed plans to shift some government agency computers from Windows to Linux. This move is part of an effort to ensure digital sovereignty and reduce reliance on US technology companies, as announced by Amiel.

Amiel emphasized the importance of regaining control over French government data and digital infrastructure. Details regarding the timeline of the migration and the specific Linux distribution to be used have not yet been provided. The Inter-Ministerial Directorate for Digitalization (DINUM) aims to lead the way in transitioning computers to Linux.

This decision to move away from Windows comes after the announcement of switching the video conferencing system from Microsoft Teams to the French product Visio, which is built on the open platform Jitsi. Furthermore, plans are underway to replace the platform for collecting, storing, and analyzing medical data with a newly developed and controlled system by the end of the year.
