Red Hat Shutters China Engineering Division

Red Hat recently made a significant decision to lay off several hundred employees from its Red Hat China division and relocate part of its Chinese engineering team to an office in India. According to reports from multiple sources, the number of employees affected ranges between 300 and 500. Despite the downsizing in China, the overall headcount of Red Hat in the Asia-Pacific region will remain the same after an increase in hiring in other areas.

The company’s decision to reorganize its workforce is part of a new geostrategy that aims to identify key locations for hiring and investing in personnel. The move to wind down the operations in China is driven by a shift in priorities, with India emerging as the primary destination for deploying engineering teams. This strategic realignment aligns with the fact that IBM, which acquired Red Hat in 2019, now has more employees in India than in the United States.
