Raspberry Pi OS Update Released

The Raspberry Pi project introduced the latest version of the Raspberry Pi OS distribution named 2026-04-13 (Raspbian). This distribution is built on the Debian 13 package base and consists of approximately 35 thousand packages in the repository. The desktop environment is derived from the labwc composite server, utilizing the wlroots library from the Sway project. Three versions of the distribution are available for download: a compact version (537MB) for server systems, a basic desktop version (1.2 GB), and a full version with an extended set of applications (1.9 GB). Both 32- and 64-bit architecture builds are available. An update has also been released for the older edition of Raspberry Pi OS (Legacy) based on the Debian 12 package base.

Key updates in this version include:

  • By default, the sudo utility no longer executes without entering a password – all authorized operations via sudo now require the password of the current user. Once the password is successfully entered within 5 minutes, sudo does not prompt for re-confirmation.

  • Performing privileged operations within the Control Center configurator now necessitates entering the current user’s password for confirmation.
