Fedora Linux 44 Beta Release Announced
The beta version of the Fedora Linux 44 distribution has been presented, marking the transition to the final stage of testing, in which only critical bugs can be corrected. The release is scheduled for April 14th. The release covers Fedora Workstation, Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop, Fedora Server, Fedora IoT, Fedora CoreOS, Fedora Cloud Base, Fedora IoT Edition, Fedora Silverblue, Fedora Kinoite and Live builds delivered in the form of spins with user environments Xfce, MATE, Cinnamon, LXDE, Phosh, Miracle, LXQt, Budgie, Sway, and Cosmic. Builds are generated for x86_64, Power64, and ARM64 (AArch64) architectures.
The most significant changes in Fedora Linux 44 include:
- Work has been done to bring the infrastructure for reproducible builds to cover at least 99% of the packages in the Fedora repository. This ensures that binaries distributed in the packages are built from the provided source code and do not contain hidden changes. Maintainers of problematic packages were recruited to participate in achieving reproducible builds.
- In distributions with the KDE desktop environment, the initial setup wizard developed by the KDE project called Plasma Setup is enabled for system customization after installation. The system configuration stages that overlap with this application are disabled in the Anaconda installer.
- In editions with KDE, the login manager SDDM has been replaced with Plasma Login Manager, developed by the KDE project.
- Fedora Games Lab edition has been reworked to offer a selection of packages and settings for computer game fans, with an updated software stack and the use of technologies such as Wayland and PipeWire.
- The GNOME desktop environment has been updated to branch 50, discontinuing X11 support and implementing a new session saving system.
- The Budgie user environment has been updated to version 10.10.
