SUSE Poised for Sale

News Report: EQT Corporation Plans to Sell SUSE to Investors

According to information received by Reuters, EQT Corporation is reportedly in talks to sell SUSE to a group of investors. The Swedish investment firm has apparently engaged Arma Partners to explore the possibility of a sale, although discussions are still in the early stages and there is no guarantee that a deal will be finalized.

SUSE, which currently brings in around $800 million in annual revenue with earnings of $250 million before taxes and depreciation, is estimated to be valued between $4 and $6 billion in the potential deal. Despite concerns about investing in IT companies amid the rise of AI-based solutions, the acquisition of SUSE is viewed as a promising opportunity due to the expected increase in demand for software to support infrastructure in light of the growing deployment of AI applications by businesses.

Originally sold to Novell in 2003 for $210 million, SUSE’s ownership has since changed hands multiple times. After Novell was acquired by Attachmate Group for $2.2 billion in 2011, SUSE’s assets were ultimately acquired by Micro Focus in 2015. In 2018, EQT purchased the SUSE business unit from Micro Focus for $2.5 billion and transitioned it into an independent company with EQT as the major shareholder.

In 2021, SUSE went public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, allowing its shares to be traded publicly. However, in 2023, EQT, as the majority shareholder, acquired shares from other investors and converted SUSE back into a private, non-listed company. At the time of this conversion, SUSE was valued at $2.96 billion.
